Prestatyn Running Club’s latest recruit, triathlete Steve Skates, had a cracking debut for the club when he finished second in the Great Orme race in Llandudno, the latest event in the Joe Brown Tuesday Evening Series.

He finished just 11 seconds behind Eryri’s Jim Bacon in 32.42, giving promise of some exciting performances in future.

Brenda Tiedtke was 51st overall and first L50 in 43.41 and Steve Skates’ girlfriend Helen Ashworth was 69th in 47.22. Super-vet David Owen was 80th overall and second M60 in 50.20.

Five female members visited the same area on Friday evening for the Deganwy Dash 5-mile race. Sue Rodgers was 67th overall and second L50 in 40.50, with Jo Edwards one place and 22 seconds behind. Liz Martin was 79th in 43.53, Caroline Jones 103rd in 45.39 and Clare Manley, still recovering from injury, was delighted to be just one minute further back.

On Saturday Arwel Jones travelled to Ellesmere Port for a Park Run with the aim of recovering some of his speed and was 20th overall in 23.27, for second place in the M55 class. On the same day Naomi Cane was the club’s sole representative in the tough Excalibur half-marathon on the Clwydian Hills. She finished 58th overall and 12th lady in 2-31.28.

Meanwhile Sian Beck returned to Abersoch for the annual 10k, which includes a finish stretch along the beach, and came home in 47.03.

This weekend the club will once again be among 60+ teams from all over Britain taking part in the annual Welsh Castles Relay from Caernarfon to Cardiff.

Each team comprises 20 runners and, as usual, there have been several withdrawals from the Prestatyn squad through injury and other commitments, but all the gaps have now been filled. The squad includes four first-timers and some who have competed in the event for over 20 years.

On Saturday the Tour de France-style convoy travels down from Caernarfon to Criccieth, Harlech and Dolgellau to Newtown, with the Sunday stages covering Llandrindod Wells, Brecon, Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly before ending in Cardiff castle.

After this Wednesday’s ((3rd)) normal club run there will be a pasta meal available at the Miners’ Arms.
