Running 200 miles in two days may seem nothing more than a pure endurance test but the Welsh Castles Relay, held at the weekend, once again proved to me much more than that.

With 65 teams, each comprising 20 runners, covering the stages between Caernarfon and Cardiff, it was also a logistical exercise in getting competitors to their start, supporting runners on their stages and then picking them up at the finish.

It was the 21st year for Prestatyn Running Club to participate in the event, which attracts top-class teams such as Salford, Serpentine Runners, Swansea, Wirral and Les Croupiers from all over the country, and it produced the usual mix of fun, camaraderie and excellent racing.

Gordon Jones got the squad off to a superb start, finishing the 9.1-mile stage from Caernarfon to Bontnewydd in seventh place, and Dean Longley completed the final leg into Cardiff in the mid-20s.

The squad included five first-timers, all of whom could be proud of their contributions to the team effort. At the end of the first day in Newtown, after 10 stages, the club lay in 42nd place, but the final placings were not known at the time of going to press.

The team comprised Gordon Jones, Sharon Jones, Paul Brandrick, Gabby Waring, Sian Beck, Steve Hatfield, Gareth Brandrick, Steve Gleave, Gareth Hughes, George Nicholls, Gareth Bailey, Jo Edwards, Arwel Jones, Russ Cheetham, Matty Smith, George Nixon, Naomi Cane, Mike Davis, Coral McShane and Dean Longley.

On Thursday evening Dean claimed his first victory in Deestriders’ Off-Road Grand Prix at Shotton, the first of four races in the series. Prestatyn provided 13 of the 66 finishers, with Steve Hatfield and Mike Davis 1st and 2nd in the M65 class, Benjamin Harrison 1st junior man, Brenda Tiedtke 2nd L50 and Jo Lewis 3rd L40.

The placings were: 1 Dean Longley 25.36, 10 George Nicholls 29.16, 34 Russ Cheetham 33.31, 37 Matty Smith 34.10, 40 Bremda Tiedtke 34.39, 43 Benjamin Harrison, 49 Steve Hatfield 36.03, 52 John Hughes-Roberts 36.37, 53 Mike Davis 37.07, 57 Jennifer Owe ns 37.39, 59 Jo Lewis 38.38, 62 Glenda Davies 40.09, 64 Liz Martin 42.22.

Hadyn Johnson was the club’s sole representative in the Mersey Tunnel 10k, which he finished in 53.42.

Three of the club’s regular mountain runners turned out in the latest round of the Joe Brown Tuesday Evening Series on the tough 3 Hills course at Penmaenmawr.

Steve Skates finished 10th overall in 34.57, with his girlfriend Helen Ashworth 50th in 50.08. Supervet David Owen was two places behind her in 52.54.

Next Monday (15th) the club will be holding its annual relays on the Tip Lane circuit and runners of all standards are urged to come along. Members are asked to meet at Saints as usual at 6.30pm and the teams will be chosen on the night.
