Fourteen members of Prestatyn Running Club travelled the short distance to Rhyl on Sunday for the Rhyl Festival races and seven gained top three places in their categories.

Eighteen-year-old Alex Ryder, returning from injury, showed no signs of rustiness as he came fourth overall in the 5k and won the junior men’s class with an excellent time in the windy conditions of 19.28.

He was followed by fellow teenager Benjamin Harrison in 22.02 and Roger Harrison-Jones, also coming back from injury, who was 2nd M75 in 28.54.

In the 10k Gordon Jones had a tremendous outing, crossing the line in third place overall in 38.04 and, unsurprisingly, winning the M55 class. Other times were: Matty Smith 44.13, Russ Cheetham 44.33, Arwel Jones (3rd M55) 46.14, Sue Rodgers (1st L55) 51.01, Jo Edwards (3rd L40) 52.07, Ann Marie Roberts 55.08, Caroline Jones (2nd L50) 58.08, Clare Manley 60.05 .

Ann-Marie’s husband Gareth Roberts opted for the half-marathon, finishing 43rd in 1-43 .00, and he was joined by Hadyn Johnson who was 87th in 1-57.42.

Four club members took part in Saturday’s Parkruns, but 180 miles apart.

At Conwy Matty Smith made his debut in the series, finishing 15th out of 170 in a time of 21.26. Gareth Hughes was 29th overall and first M65, improving his age-group record by 14 seconds to 23.09, while Debbie Richards also set a pb of 25.47 in 58th place.

Meanwhile Steve Hatfield ran in the 5k event at Cleethorpes, finishing 30th overall and second M65 in 23.06.

Last week Dave Hughes was the club’s sole representative in the British Masters’ 5k championships in Horwich, finishing in 27.42 on the testing three-lap course, and Brenda Tiedtke and Dafydd Owen travelled to Llanberis for the final race in the Joe Brown Tuesday evening series.

Dafydd was out on the hills again a few days later, finishing the 12-mile Foel Fras race from Aber in 3-21.35.

Amie Bagnall shook off her unfortunate episode in the previous week’s Stone 10k with an excellent run in the Sale Sizzler 5k, clocking 20.54.

On July 8 the club will be holding a social run in the Penycloddiau area of the Clwydians, and members are asked to meet at the Kinmel Arms, Llandyrnog, at 6.30pm. After the run there will be a get-together and meal at the Kinmel.
