The new cross-country season which opens this Saturday with the first fixture in the Grand Prix Express North Wales League at Bangor is being heralded with heightened anticipation by members of Prestatyn Running Club following the recruitment of so many newcomers over the past 12 months.

Inevitable the club will once again rely heavily on its experienced athletes, some of whom are unavailable for the Bangor race, but several of the new recruits are capable of being a real asset to the men’s and ladies’ teams.

The men have come close to gaining promotion so many times in recent years and it is hoped thata consistently strong turnout will produce the results this year.

It is also hoped that some of the club’s talented juniors will be represented in the North Wales Junior League tie being held at the same venue.

Last week one of the newcomers, Steve Skates, finished second in the inaugural Two Lakes races, a 14-mile event around Llyn Brenig and Llyn Alwen. His time was 1-27.10. His partner Helen Ashworth was fourth lady overall in 2-o1.47 and super-vet David Owen was first M60 in 2-19.52.

David also did the Abersoch half-marathon recently and was 12th over 50 in 1-54.45.

The club is to stage another 5k race on the Marsh Tracks circuit on November 16, with a 1k race for juniors. Entries will be taken on the night.

It has also been confirmed that the club will again host the North Wales 5k championships in May, 2016, though the event is being switched from Rhyl to Prestatyn.
