It was another busy weekend for members of Prestatyn Running Club and although there was an unfortunate clash of fixtures there were some excellent results.

The most satisfying achievement was that of the club’s ladies who, after turning out in the final fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League at Oswestry, clinched promotion to Division 1.

It was a well-earned reward after an excellent all-round effort by new and experienced members. The men’s hopes of emulating the achievement fell away over the last two fixtures but there was good reason to look forward with optimism to the 2016-17 season.

There were individual end-of-season awards for Coral McShane (1st U20), Gabby Waring (2nd L55), George Nixon (3rd M60), Roger Harrison-Jones (1st M75) and Dave Hughes (2nd M65).

The same day Amie Bagnall and Matty Smith joined the usual quality field for the Alsager 5, Amie clocking an excellent 32.03 with Matty 27 seconds behind.

Five members of the club have been named in the North Wales squad for the UK inter-counties’ cross-country championship in Birmingham on March 12, which is one of the main events in the calendar and features most of the country’s top cross-country athletes.

Dean Longley, who admits that he prefers the roads to the country, has done enough in his few appearances to earn selection in the senior men’s team, while Steve Skates, whose training has been interrupted by injury, is a reserve.

Abbie Cheetham and the much improved Coral McShane are in the U20 ladies’ team and second-claimer Amie Bagnall, who was third senior lady in last week’s North Wales championships, is also included.

Benjamin Harrison was originally named in the U20 squad before it was found that he was slightly over the age-limit.
