Saturday was a big day for members of Prestatyn Running Club’s beginners’ group when they took the plunge and took part in the Conwy Parkrun.

For many of them it was their first attempt at the 5k distance after joining the training sessions just six weeks ago and they acquitted themselves brilliantly.

The 16 beginners were joined by eight more experienced members and leaders who encouraged them on the course.

The finishing times were:

  • Ben Harrison 23.02
  • Amy Reid 23.20
  • Mike Davis 23.58
  • Laura Reid 26.42
  • Debbie Wade 27.41
  • Gary Johnson 28.00
  • Alicia Williams 28.24
  • Abbie Williams 28.41
  • Amanda Williams 29.08
  • Lisa Graham 30.17
  • Gray Williams 34.24
  • Julia Evans 34.28
  • Samantha Griffiths 34.52
  • Graham Duerden 34.53
  • Debbie Cartwright 35.06
  • Gareth Hughes 35.07
  • Wendy Burton 36.09
  • Jason Burton 36.09
  • Julie Evans 38.22
  • Marjie Clark 39.01
  • Beverley Davies 39.01
  • Sarah Tait 40.00
  • Duncan Longley 40.01

The club’s two most prolific mountain runners took part in the Dash in the Daylight, a 10k race on the newly created trail and cross-country course in Llandegla Forest. Helen Ashworth finished in an excellent 59 minutes and Dafydd Owen in 72.33.

The club can boast two new national title-holders after Sunday’s 10-mile race in Rhyl which incorporated the Welsh championships.

Twelve members fought the strong headwind along the promenade, Dean Longley finishing seventh overall and fifth senior man in 58.57 and Matty Smith, whose first race was last year’s 10-miler, took an enormous 23 minutes off his time.

Amie Bagnall, running in the colours of Salford, was fourth lady overall in an excellent pb of 68.07. She not only took the Welsh U23 title but also the senior ladies’ title. The other champion was Sian Beck, who won the L35 class in the open and closed event.

The race marked a debut in the red vest for Victoria Owens just four days after joining the club.

Other results were:

  • 52 Matty Smith 68.34 (chip time)
  • 59 Gareth Bailey 68.53
