With membership at its highest for about 20 years Prestatyn Running Club is entering a new era.

At the annual meeting on Friday the club’s two longest-serving officers both stood down - secretary Gareth Hughes, who founded the club , having held office for over 30 years, and treasurer Steve Hatfield after 26 years. They were succeeded respectively by Katie Dawson and Sue Rodgers.

Other officials are: Chairman, Mike Davis; vice-chairman and membership secretary, Duncan Longley; men’s captain (road and cross-country), Russ Cheetham; ladies’ road captain, Alli Reid; off-road captain, Helen Ashworth; junior representative, Mike Davis; welfare officers, Mike Davis and Jennifer Owens.

In his annual report the chairman said it had been a brilliant year for the club, with the women having gained promotion to Division 1 of the North Wales Cross-Country League and both men and women in with a good chance of promotion in the Borders League.

The junior section was developing and the beginners’ sessions had proved a massive success, resulting in about 20 new members enlisting, while the high turnout in races was also very encouraging.

The appalling weather put paid to Sian Beck’s hopes of a new pb in last week’s Cardiff half-marathon. After 10 miles she was on target to beat last year’s time of 1-39.40 but the wind and torrential rain in the closing stages thwarted her ambition, and she crossed the line in a still highly creditable 1-41.43.

The club’s annual social evening and prizegiving takes place this Saturday ((9th)) at Meliden Golf Club, when a record attendance is expected.
