Prestatyn Running Club’s Steve Skates claimed a little piece of history on Sunday when he made his debut in the London Marathon

After a perfectly judged run, going through halfway in 78.13, he finished in 2-38.35, the fastest time by a club member for over 20 years.

It was also a pb by 20 minutes, though his previous best for the distance was recorded in 2011 in the tougher Snowdonia Marathon.

His partner Helen Ashworth had good cause to celebrate. In her third consecutive “London” she sliced 12 minutes off her 2015 time, coming home in 3-42.06.

Just 33 seconds behind her was Naomi Cane, who achieved a negative split, covering the second half faster than the first. The fourth club member taking part was Debbie Richards, who went through 13 miles in 1-57 and crossed the line in 4-12.13.

Last week three members who have been training on the track in recent weeks competed in the Deeside Open Meeting. In the senior men’s 400m Gareth Bailey clocked 62.7, while Alex Ryder and Ben Harrison were third and fourth respectively in the U20’s class with times of 65.4 and 78.00. Alex also ran in the 800m, finishing first in 2-29.1.

Tonight ((Wed, 27th)) the club hosts the seventh and final fixture in the Borders Road-Running League and it looks set to be a special night, with both the men’s and women’s teams virtually certain of promotion to Division 1 and several members also in line for individual awards.

The club is to hold another running and social weekend in Aberdaron on June 24-26 and anyone interested in going is asked to notify Gareth Hughes as soon as possible.

Family pride was at stake in the Mold triathlon on Sunday when husband and wife Karl and Liz Martin had their own little duel, with Karl taking the honours.

In the 400m swim Karl finished 10 seconds ahead, but Liz made it up on the transition. In the 22k bike ride regained the lead, finishing over three minutes clear, and although Liz’s greater experience on the 5k run paid off, clocking 27.35, she came home 5.2 seconds behind overall.
