After a quiet week or so Prestatyn Running Club members produced some outstanding performances over the weekend – over a range of distances and a variety of terrains.

Pride of place went to Steve Skates, who, a week after winning the Conwy Parkrun, claimed victory in the gruelling Excalibur Marathon over the Clwydian Hills. His partner Helen Ashworth grabbed her share of the glory, too, by finishing second lady and 17th overall.

Times: 1 Steve Skates 3-28.13, 17 Helen Ashworth 4-54.42, 33 Wyn Roberts 5-52.03, 35 Craig Mitchley 5-33.28, 77 Vic Owens 6-46.36.

By contrast, the Christleton 5k has the reputation of having one of the fastest courses in the country and Amie Bagnall took advantage of it to chalk up yet another pb, finishing in 18.24. Matty Smith clocked 19.15 and Sian Beck also had a good run, crossing the line in 21.14.

The biggest turnout of members was in the highly popular Essar Chester half-marathon, with Tony Devenport leading the contingent home in 1-29.14.

Other placings (chip times) were: Des Davies 1-42.20, Paul Brandrick 1-44.33, Ally Reid 1-45.17 (pb), Nick Wood 1-46.04, John Jones 1-48.43, John Hughes-Roberts 1-54.52, Coral McShane 1-56.50, Sian Culshaw 1-57.12, Sue Rodgers 2-02.31, Julie Logan 2-03.29, Andrew Aitken 2-11.02, Roger Harrison-Jones 2-11.08 (1st M75), Jennifer Owens 2-13.24, Linda McKeown 2-26.11, Gill Brandrick 2-26.56, Lynda Rowlands 2-27.15, Katrina Brandrick 2-33.14, D ebbie Cartwright 2-36.50, Julie Evans 2-49.42, Val Jones 3-19.06.

James Rodgers opted for the much tougher Snowdonia Half-Marathon in the Conwy Valley and finished a highly creditable 71st in 1-51.28.

Once again there were several pbs in the weekend’s Parkruns, notably that of Steve Stocker, who finished second overall on the tough Wepre course in Connah’s Quay in 20,46.

At Conwy the placings were: 20 Callum Dally 21.17, 40 Nigel Bakewell 23.04, 156 Debbie Weedman 30.43 (pb), 195 Deborah Tierney 33.43, 213 Lesley Furneaux 34.49 (pb), 218 Diane Bancroft 36.13.

Four members travelled to Manchester last week for the Trafford Grand Prix track meeting, two of them claiming pbs and the other two season’s bests. The results in their various graded races were:- 800m: 2 Leon Bagnall 2-18.53 (pb), Benjamin Harrison 2-41.97 (pb). 3,000m: 3 Andrew Bromley 10-02.87 (sb), 11 Dean Longley 9-28.89 (sb).

Last week over 50 members attended the social run in Rhewl, near Ruthin, with three routes available for the different abilities, all finishing along the scenic Lady Bagot’s Drive.

After the run members enjoyed a meal at the local village pavilion provided by the ladies of the village, and during the evening a tankard was presented to long-serving super-vet Dafydd Owen to mark his remarkable comeback from serious injury.

Names are now urgently required for the next social event, the annual running weekend in Aberdaron on June 23-25, to which members, friends and families are welcome.
