    The cross-country season opened quite gently at the weekend with the first fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales League on a dry and mainly flat Wrexham course.

    There was once again a strong turnout by Prestatyn Running Club, who fielded 18 men and 13 women. At the same venue the club’s juniors also had a successful outing in the North Wales Junior League.

    While most people need time to recover from their holidays Prestatyn Running Club’s Steve Skates almost literally hit the ground running at the weekend.

    Less than 24 hours after returning home he and partner Helen Ashworth were in action in the Trailfest half-marathon which started in Blaenau Ffestiniog and finished on the Cob in Porthmadog. Though there was a substantial overall drop in height the course included several testing climbs through woodland.
