A record 33 members of Prestatyn Running Club turned out for the sixth and penultimate race in the Borders League at Mold on Sunday as the men and women sought promotion.

As expected, Dean Longley led the contingency home but there was a brilliant run by Darrell Davies, who recently rejoined the club and finished 28th.

There were eye-catching performances right through the field, with Leon Bagnall having a very impressive debut and Des Davies making a welcome return after injuring himself in the Masters’ cross-country championships in Ruthin in March last year.

Amie Bagnall continued her outstanding sequence, coming 89th overall and claiming some very prominent "scalps".

Gareth Hughes and Vicki Owens both pulled out and Russ Cheetham, Jo Lewis and Liz Martin lost many places as they stopped to help them.

The placings were:

  • 55 Alex Ryder

After the race club captain Russ Cheetham presented a tankard to Steve Hatfield on his retirement after 25 years as treasurer.

John Hickman, one of four club members who competed in the Chester Spring 5 last week, won the M75 class in 40.09. The other three were Gareth Bailey (73rd in 32.09, Benjamin Harrison (128th in 35.47) and Russ Cheetham (196th in 39.27).

Last week Hadyn Johnson, who favours the longer distances, clocked 4-45.09 in warm conditions in the Liverpool Marathon, while Katie Dawson finished the Cheshire 10k at Ardley Hall in 52.49 and in the Denbigh 10k Vicki Owens clocked 53.46.

This Sunday four members will line up with the thousands of competitors in the London Marathon. Steve Skates, who gained the qualifying time for the Welsh Championships, which are incorporated in the event, is the only male representative and he will be joined by Helen Ashworth, Naomi Cane and Debbie Richards.

On April 27 the club hosts the final fixture in this year’s Borders League series at the Ffrith Beach, and with the men and women still in with a chance of promotion the prize giving which follows could be a memorable one for the club.

Volunteers are needed to help on the evening.
