A strong contingent of 21 members of Prestatyn Running Club travelled over the border on Sunday for the annual Essar Chester half-marathon, with young and not-so-young producing some excellent performances.

The club’s only prizewinner among the 5,000-plus starters was super-vet Roger Harrison-Jones, who finished second in the M75 class. Eddie Naisby was fourth in the same category simply because there was category his own age-group, the over-85s!

It was particularly pleasing to see among the red vests some of last year’s beginners’ group and one from this year’s set. Katrina Brandrick, who was maki ng her debut at the distance and was accompanied by husband Gareth, had the satisfaction of breaking the two-hour barrier.

Three of the club’s ladies travelled to Connah’s Quay for the first Parkrun in Wepre Park, which is being referred to as one of the toughest in the country with its hilly, two-lap course.

Ally Reid finished 35th overall in 27.25, Amanda Williams 62nd in 32.19 and Clare Manley was first in her age-group in 33.29.

Meanwhile Arwel Jones was just outside his pb in the Conwy Parkrun, clocking 22.41 and Gareth White again ran with daughter Evie, crossing the line in 29.24.

Alex Ryder, who turned 19 on Sunday, had an early birthday present when he picked up a bronze medal in the 800-metres at the North Wales track and field championships in Wrexham on Saturday. He also competed in the 1,500-metres.

This Saturday ((21st)) the club hosts the North Wales 5k championships at the new Ffrith Beach venue, with the main race at 11.15 being preceded by junior races over 1k and 2k, starting at 10am.
