The Ffrith Complex was the new venue for Prestatyn Running Club’s annual 5k race on Saturday and the event, which incorporated the North Wales championship, proved a huge success.

The single-lap course proved popular and the facilities at the complex were ideal for such an event. Thanks to sponsorship from Prestatyn Town Council there were prizes in all age categories.

Particularly pleasing was the turnout of over 130 for the five junior races which were well supported by primary schools over a wide area, and the icing on the cake was the performances of some of the Running Club’s juniors.

Eden Jones won the girls’ Years 3 and 4 race and Joe Duffy was second in the equivalent boys’ event. In the Years 5 and 6 girls’ 2k race Rachel Hyslop came second and Ceri Vaughan was also second in the Years 7-11 event, with Liam Martin second boy.

The 5k winners were Ryan Roberts (Cybi) and veteran Emma Crowe (Wrexham), but the host club had its share of class winners, who received their awards from the Mayor, Councillor Bob Murray.

Coral McShane (U20), Amie Bagnall (U23), Debbie Richards (L55) and Dave Hughes (M75) all won their age-groups in the championship, Sian Beck (L35), Gabby Waring (L55), Steve Stocker (M40), George Nicholls (M45) and George Nixon (M60) came second, with Liz Martin (L35) and Caroline Jones (L50) third.

The club placings were:

  • 13 George Nicholls 18.49
  • 16 Matty Smith 19.17
  • 18 Steve Stocker 19.36
  • 19 Amie Bagnall 19.38
  • 26 George Nixon 20.43
  • 42 Des Davies 21.20
  • 47 Sian Beck 21.35
  • 50 Arwel Jones 22.16
  • 58 Coral McShane 23.22
  • 64 Debbie Richards 24.53
  • 65 Ally Reid 24.56
  • 66 Vicki Owens 25.02
  • 69 Gabby Waring 25.19
  • 74 Julie Logan 26.34
  • 81 Liz Martin 27.51
  • 82 Dave Hughes 27.58
  • 83 Caroline Jones 28.37
  • 86 Karl Martin 30.04

Amie Bagnall’s marked improvement over the past year was recognised with a special presentation at the post-race awards ceremony. She was presented with a cheque and trophy after being chosen as the top under-23 road runner in North Wales over the past year.

After helping at the Ffrith race the previous day Alex Ryder and Jennifer Owens were among the 35,000 starters in Sunday’s Great Manchester 10k. Alex sliced another 62 seconds off his pb, coming home a superb 252nd in 37.58 and Jennifer was 4,020th in 51 .05.

Last week four members took part in the latest race in the Tuesday night series of fell-runs – the Aber Dash at Abergwyngregyn, which may be scenic but includes a couple of very stiff climbs.

Rob Alexander was 43rd in 41 .04, club captain Helen Ashworth 77th in 46.36, Jo Hoppes 99th in 50.27 and Mel Hooper close behind in 52.54 for 105th place.

Unable to attend the Ffrith 5k because of a wedding Steve Skates and Helen Ashworth both turned out in the Conwy Parkrun for the first time, and it was a successful debut for Steve who won in 17.33 Helen finished in 23.15.
