The strength-in-depth which now exists within Prestatyn Running Club was demonstrated over the past couple of weeks which saw a glut of fixtures culminating in the two-day Welsh Castles Relay from Caernarfon to Cardiff.

Only three days earlier 31 members, including some of the flourishing improvers’ group, had turned out in the opening race of Deestriders’ Off-Road Series in Shotton.

The honours of the week went to two of the club’s female members Amie Bagnall and Jo Hoppes. Amie did the “double”, finishing first at Shotton on Thursday and then winning her stage of the Welsh Castles Relay on Sunday.

Recent recruit Jo H deserves a special mention after completing three tough races in five days, coming to the club’s rescue in the process.

On Tuesday she and partner Rob Alexander ran in the Three Hills race in Penmaenmawr, the latest in the Tuesday night series of fell-races, and she was then among those who travelled to Shotton two days later.

On Saturday she stepped into the breach when the club minibus failed to reach Dolgellau in time for Wyn Roberts to start his mountain section of the Castles Relay, and performed creditably on one of the toughest stages of the weekend. That enabled Wyn to run the subsequent leg which Jo had been pencilled in for.

The previous week Jo and Rob were among members who competed in the Great Orme Challenge, also part of the Tuesday night series. Results: 28 Steve Skates 35.31, 41 Rob Alexander 38.37, 89 Wyn Roberts 45.17, 92 Helen Ashworth 45.29, 120 Vic Owen 50.26, 124 Mel Hooper 52.25, 127 Amy Reid 53.10, 128 Ally Reid 55.59.

The club provided about one-third of the total entries at Shotton and there were successes throughout the field, with Amie Bagnall first lady home.

Eighteen year old Alex Ryder got the club off to a cracking start in the Caernarfon – Cardiff Castles Relay, finishing a superb 12th in the Caernarfon-Penygroes stage, and the 200-mile event produced its usual mix of fun, last- minute panics and very solid performances. Alex was one of nine first-timers in the Prestatyn squad.

Amie won the second stage on the second day, from Llanbadarn Fynydd to Crossgates, the same stage on which Lynne Maddison had previously won for the club.

The heat caused problems for several competitors, especially on Sunday, and among those who suffered was newcomer Vic Owens who bravely managed to complete her stage before needing hospital treatment.
