As expected, a large number of the Prestatyn Running Club’s improvers’ group turned out for the club’s annual relays on the Tip Lane circuit, helping to make up six teams of five members each.

The organisers did a pretty good job as it ended in an exciting finish in which the in-form Leon Bagnall overhauled Matty Smith to take his team to victory. Not surprisingly, he recorded the fastest lap time of 5m 9s, just two seconds faster than fellow teenager Alex Ryder, who also made up a lot of ground.

The winning Blue team of John Hughes-Roberts, Julie Evans, Bev Davies, Gary Johnson and Leon Bagnall finished in 37.43, followed by the Pink squad in 37.51, Yellows in 37.58, Blacks in 39.02, Whites in 39.23 and Greens in 39.47.

PRC Everest Challenge

On Saturday almost 30 members took on a different challenge when they conquered Everest – or at least the equivalent height.

On a flight of steps in Dyserth they covered a total of 29,000 feet of ascent, each climbing an average of 25 ascents. One member, Graham Duerden, played his part by running up a similar flight of steps while on holiday in Portugal.

The money raised will go towards the restoration of the old station goods yard in Meliden into a cafe, bike hire shop, craft units and community hub.

The only member in competitive action at the weekend was Debbie Richards, who completed the Conwy Parkrun in 25.33, finishing in 76th place overall.

Last week ultra-specialist George Nicholls, who is aiming to complete a “grand slam” of the ultra series, ran in the North Downs Way 100-mile race. Starting in Farnham, the race involves 20% of road and 80% trail. George finished a highly creditable 50th in 23h 57m 54s.
