The Prestatyn Running Club pair of Steve Stocker and George Nicholls created a little bit of history when they became the first members in the club’s 34-year history to pick up an award in an ultra-distance race.

They ran as a two-man relay in the National Forest Way 75-miler which started in Staffordshire and finished in Leicestershire, passing through the National Arboretum. Navigation was difficult at times on the off-road sections, especially as George ran through the night.

Some runners ran solo and there were classes for two or four runners among the 44 entrants. Steve ran first and despite wandering three miles off-course finished the 35.5 miles in 7: 24.01, third overall and first in the relay.

He handed over to George, by now an experienced ultra-runner, and he covered his 40+ miles in 12:19.20. Their aggregate time of 19:43.21 gave them first prize in the two-man category.

The five members who took part in the Trailffest 12-mile race from Tanygrisiau, near Ffestiniog, to Porthmadog were soon reminded that it is not the purely downhill event it might appear. Conditions for the race were good but there was a strong headwind on the final mile along the Cob.

Rob Alexander had a fine run , finishing 18th overall in 1-57.09, and was followed by Helen Ashworth (60th in 2-17.45), Jo Hoppes, who was just four places and four minutes behind, Wyn Roberts (71st in 2-28.11) and Steve Gleave (105th in 2-39.38).

Only two club members took part in Parkruns on Saturday and they were at different venues. At Wepre Benjamin Harrison finished sixth overall in a new pb of 22.53, while Andrew Scott was rightly satisfied with his 24.49 time at Conwy.

Three other club members whose names were omitted from the results of the Vyrnwy half-marathon were Gareth and Ann-Marie Roberts (both 2-01.31) and Eleri Jones (2-17.36).

This Saturday Oct 1st the club is holding a ceilidh with the band Mooncoin at the Ffrith Complex and tickets are still available at £10 each, to include a hot and cold buffet.
