The cross-country season opened quite gently at the weekend with the first fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales League on a dry and mainly flat Wrexham course.

There was once again a strong turnout by Prestatyn Running Club, who fielded 18 men and 13 women. At the same venue the club’s juniors also had a successful outing in the North Wales Junior League.

The women’s race produced a major surprise – and a very pleasant one for the club – in the performance of 15-year-old Lois Lee. Having joined the club only minutes before the race, she boldly set off near the front of the field and though she slipped back slightly had an outstanding run to finish 31st.

Lois is a pupil of St David’s College, Llandudno, where she is coached by Welsh international mountain runner Matthew Roberts.

Just three places behind her was fellow teenager Jenna Bagnall, whose sister Amie was the club’s first finisher in 11th place overall. Running with the women, Gareth Hughes came second in the M70 class.

Steve Skates was again the club’s top performer in the fiercely contested men’s race, coming a superb 5th, while Andrew Bromley gave a typical 100% in placing 23rd.

In a very satisfying outing for the club it was good to see some of the newer members having a go and to welcome back others such as Gethin Evans.

Remarkably, less than 24 hours after making his cross-country debut James Rogers set a new pb in the Chester marathon, finishing in 3:30.13 to take 13 minutes off his previous best.

Only hours before the Wrexham run Nigel Bakewell turned out in the weekly Parkrun at Conwy, where teenager Callum Dally was once again the first club member home. He was 16th in 22.15, followed by Nigel (98th in 29.22), Suzanne Evans (152nd in a pb of 34.05) and Julie Evans (164th in 35.07).

Clair Attterbury, a full-blown convert to the mud and challenges of off-road running, acted as sweeper-up in Saturday’s Wepre Parkrun, jogging behind to finish in 55.17. Jim Kimber won the previous week’s Wepre Park run at his first attempt, clocking 21.05.

Sian Beck, not a lover of cross-country, kept on the road in the Bangor 10k which she won in a season’s best of 43.53. In the same race Anne-Marie Roberts took second plac e in the L45 class in 52.58.

This Saturday the club’s annual ceilidh with the band Mooncoin is being held at the Ffrith Complex and tickets are still available at £10 each, to include a buffet.
