Even in ideal weather a 50-mile race presents a huge physical and mental challenge but Prestatyn Running Club’s Steve Skates defied the conditions with an outstanding performance at the weekend.

In temperatures around 30 degrees he took on the Endurancelife 50-mile race from Borth-y-Gest, over Snowdonia to Conwy. The conditions proved too much for his closest challenger around the halfway point but Steve pushed on and not only won in a new course record of 9 hours 19 minutes but also beat those competing as relay teams. He also took the organizers by surprise as they had not erected the finish gantry by the time he appeared.

Teenagers Jenna Bagnall and Lois Lee (pictured) also took gold at the weekend despite having to contend not only with the heat but with the pall of smoke from the Saddleworth Moor fire.

They were in the North Wales team which won the under-19s’ class at the British inter-counties’ fell-running championships at Glossop. Eryri’s Anabelle McQueen won the race, Jenna was 8th and Lois 10th, which meant that they pipped Lancashire and Yorkshire by a single point.

The previous weekend, while Steve and about 20 members were enjoying short(ish) social runs on the Llyn Peninsula another clubmate had much more serious matters on his mind in the same area.

James Rogers braved the heat and very testing course in the Penllyn 50-mile Ultra race. He had a fine run, finishing 24th overall in 12 hours 26 minutes.

With 31 runners the club made up almost a quarter of the total field for Sunday’s Fairy Freckled Cow trail race around the Alwen Reservoir. The race incorporated the North Wales championship, and as first lady home Amie Bagnall took the regional title.

Sixteen members took on coastal runs of a different kind at the Rhyl Festival of Running. Andy Bromley was second in the 5k, with Dean Longley and new “find” Joshua Cerefice both claiming top five places, and Amie Bagnall was third lady home.

In the 10k the outstanding performer was Gordon Jones who, just a few weeks short of his 60th birthday, finished fourth overall in a brilliant 36.57.
