It has been celebrations all round for members of Prestatyn Running Club over the past week, with some excellent individual and team performances – and a rather special “debut” for two members.

The Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League season opened at Baschuirch, near Shrewsbury, with last year’s champion Steve Skates coming an excellent fourth just five days after becoming a dad for the first time. It will be some time before Mum – club captain Helen Ashworth – returns to competition.

Though the course was much kinder than last winter it was still a tough competition, but recent recruit Josh Cerefice had a superb outing, coming 33rd overall.

The over-65 men ran with the supervets and women for the first time and George Nixon won his category to earn automatic selection for the Wales team for the British and Irish Masters’ international in Swansea next month. The over-65s’ team also came top in a close contest with Buckley.

In the ladies’ race teenager Lois Lee had a storming run, coming 13th overall and second U20. A total of five members were competing for the first time on the country, including promising youngster Liam Martin.

The placings were:- Senior men: 4 Steve Skates 30.41 (1st M40), 21 Andy Bromley 32.49, 33 Josh Cerefice 34.15, 62 Rob Alexander 36.38, 96 James Rogers 39.51, 111 Steve Weedman 40.43, 125 Benjamin Harrison 43.17, 127 Wyn Roberts 43.32, 130 Arwel Jones 4404. Team: 7th in Division 1. Masters: 8th.

Amie Bagnall missed the opening fixture as she joined the masses in the Cardiff half-marathon, where she took two minutes off her pb, clocking 1-23.31. After missing a lot of training with injuries Matty Smith was also pleased with his time of 1-26.11.

The day after his efforts at Baschurch James Rogers was surprised to set a pb in Sunday’s Chester marathon with a time of 3-14. Gethin Evans clocked 3-32 and Nigel Bakewell, who has also been injured, 4-08.

With so many other events taking place there were fewer members than usual at the local Parkruns. At Bodelwyddan Rachel Jackson and Bethan Kemp both set new pbs. Placings were: 20 Rachel Jackson 28.23, 34 Bethan Kemp 30.21, 67 Val Jones 43.27, 108 (mopper-up) Sandra Bickerstaffe 44.19.
