An unfortunate clash with the following day’s Borders League fixture meant there was a disappointing turnout of men and women for Saturday’s third fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League at Wrexham.
Lois Lee was the first member to finish in the first race, in 36th place overall, with a sizeable gap then to Ally Reid, who was 94th. George Nixon extended his unbeaten run in the M65 class.
In the senior men’s race Steve Skates was involved in a real battle at the front and at one stage led the field, only to be caught on the fourth and final lap. He eventually came home 4th and first M40.

M65: 1 George Nixon 24.43. M70: 2 Gareth Hughes 29.06, 4 Mike Davis 30.06. M80: 1 Roger Harrison-Jones 33.29, 2 David Hughes 37.50.
Senior men: 4 Steve Skates (1st M40) 29.32, 60 Rob Alexander 35.10, 110 James Rogers 39.02, 111 Steve Weedman 39.04, 124 Arwel Jones 41.09, 129 Wyn Roberts 42.06.
Both the men and women finished 7th in Division 1 on the day and now lie 6th overall, while the over-65s’ team won once again.
Father-and-daughter John and Joy Hickman had a double celebration by winning their age categories in the Arley Hall 10k. Joy was first L50 in 44.20 and John first M75 in 55.35.
Steve Brown was the club’s only representative in Saturday’s Betws-y-Coed 10k trail race over a tough but scenic course. In a field of over 340 he finished 103rd in 57.06.
With so many other events on only two club members were in Parkrun action on Saturday. At Bodelwyddan Gethin Evans was second in 20.49 and Rachel Jackson finished 27th overall in a new pb of 27.40. Gethin and Sian Beck’s son Iestyn set a new course record of 23.03 in the J10 class.
Two of the junior section’s most promising athletes had very good outings in the North Wales Junior League at Wrexham. In the under-11 boys’ race Joe Duffy came second and in the girls’ race Rose Hayes was 11th.
This weekend three members – Steve Skates, George Nixon and Gareth Hughes – are in the Welsh team for the British and Irish Masters’ cross-country international in Swansea.
On Sunday a large contingent from the club is expected to turn out in the Conwy half-marathon, in which weather conditions can play a big part.
