Four individual medals and three team awards was the fine haul for Prestatyn Running Club at Saturday’s North Wales Cross-Country Championships at Rhug, Corwen, but the club had plenty of other reasons to be proud.

Once again the club hosted the event, providing most of the marshals, and it was a huge success, helped by the unusually mild weather and perfect ground conditions.

In the ladies’ race Amie Bagnall retained her title in style, beating a much higher quality field than last year. Lois Lee took bronze in the U20 class, and they helped the ladies finished second in the team competition.

The men’s race also followed a similar pattern to last year, with Prestatyn’s Steve Skates and Ricky Challinor (Liverpool Harriers) engaged in a fascinating battle over the tough three-lap course. Steve tried his best to shake off his younger opponent who bided his time before moving ahead on the final lap to win by just two seconds.

Second overall, Steve won the M40 class, and golds also went to George Nixon (M65) and Mike Davis (M70). Both the senior men and masters’ teams finished third.

Results:- Girls under 11: 22 Elise Reay 6.04. Boys under 11: 8 Joseph Duffy 7.59. With two wins and one second place behind him Joe had been well-placed to win the North Wales Junior League title but unfortunately he was unwell on Saturday. As a result he bravely struggled to complete the course and had to settle for second place on aggregate, still a highly commendable effort.

M65: 1 George Nixon 23.22. M70: 1 Mike Davis 30.02.
