The Borders Road-Running League ended on a high note for Prestatyn Running Club with a great turnout of 34 members in the final race on home ground.

Eight members picked up individual awards after the seven-race series, but also encouraging was the number of new faces seen over the season.

The downpour had eased by the time the race started and the two-lap course at the Ffrith proved popular, with huge credit due to club chairman Gareth White, who organised the event, and the numerous members who turned out to help.

The end-of-season winners were:- Amie Bagnall, 2nd senior lady; Joy Hickman, 3rd L50; Dean Longley, 4th SM; Steve Forsyth, 5th SM; Steve Skates, 2nd M40; George Nixon, 2nd M65; Gareth Hughes, 1st M70; Mike Davis, 2nd M70.

The full results of Wednesday’s four-mile ace are still not available, but the placings were: 4 Steve Skates, 10 Andrew Bromley, 12 Canyon Wilson, 27 Steve Forsyth, 40 Josh Cerefice, 41 Leon Bagnall, 58 Amie Bagnall, 73 Matty Smith, 77 Alex Ryder, 81 Rob Alexander, 100 George Nixon, 122 Sian Beck, 124 Lois Lee, 131 James Rogers, 132 Steve Weedman, 159 Darren Thompson, 163 Joy Hickman, 168 George Nicholls, 173 Benjamin Harrison, 177 Helen Ashworth, 191 Gareth Hughes, 203 Jo Hoppes, 211 Mike Pearson, 213 Alan Jones, 215 Ally Reid, 219 Jo Lewis, 227 Hannah Garnett, 248 Arwel Jones, 253 Mike Davis, 259 Cara Jones, 261 Liz Martin, 269 Helen Alefounder, 272 Steve Hatfield, 278 Debbie Weedman, 280 Caroline Jones.

Months of solid training and determination paid off for Matty Smith when he achieved his target of breaking the three-hour mark in Sunday’s London Marathon. He clocked 2-57.31. The club’s only other entrant, Chris Yorke, had a bad day. He went through halfway in 1-28 but suffered later, coming home in 3-53.34.

The same day Gareth Roberts took on a very different marathon – the new Sea2Summit event from the Nova, Prestatyn, along the Offa’s Dyke trail to the Moel y Gyw above Llanbedr DC. He finished 14th in 5-58.18.

In the half-marathon as far as Moel y Parc, which involved 3,800 feet of climbing, Rob Alexander was the second man home in 2-21.10, Wyn Roberts finished in 2-43.15, with Helen Ashworth just nine seconds behind, and the fourth club member taking part , Jo Hoppes, was 15th in 2-49.29..

On Friday evening three members ran in the popular Mid-Cheshire Spring 5k in Kingsley. In a quality field Andrew Bromley was 87th in 16.23, Amie Bagnall 223rd in 18.10 and James Rogers 364th in 20.37.

With local Parkruns affected by the weather on Saturday one of the few members in action was Bill Scriven, who clocked 26.02 in the Fletcher Park run in Manchester.

Last week John McKenna, one of the club’s founder-members in 1982, had a brilliant run in the Crete marathon, where he now lives. Now 70, he finished in 3-33.

In the latest race in the Tuesday night series of fell-races, on Moel Lus, near Dwygyfylchi, six of the club’s women and two men turned out in a big field. The placings were: 77 Helen Ashworth 34.44, 97 Steve Brown 37.27, 105 Neil Stephenson 40.17, 113 Jayne Penrhyn-Jones 41.16, 119 Tracy Colligan 47.37, 126 Julia Evans 49.52, 128 Cara Jones 51.39, 129 Helen Alefounder 51.39.

George Nixon (M65) and Gareth Hughes (M70) have again been included in the Celtic squad for the Masters’ international against England within the Birmingham 10k on May 26.

On Wednesday, May 8, the club’s training session will take place in Talacre but members are asked to meet at the Sports Centre as usual at 6.30pm.
