Prestatyn Running Club’s current strength in depth was demonstrated on Sunday when the club fielded no fewer than 10 teams in the inaugural North Wales road-relay championships in Llandudno.

Four of the teams, each comprising three members, came away with medals, but it was also a huge success from the point of view of camaraderie, club spirit and experience. For the majority of members it was their first experience of such an event.

The supervets, the over-70s, got the day off to a good start by winning gold. The over-60s took silver, thanks largely to a storming comeback run from Gordon Jones, while the senior men’s A-team and the over-50 ladies both finished third in their classes.

  • While his clubmates were in action on the totally flat Llandudno promenade Steve Skates was approaching the final stages of his 185-mile ultra-marathon along the length of Offa’s Dyke.

He was still competing at the time of going to press and showing tremendous form. By Sunday evening, having reached Llangollen, he was lying fifth, having rarely been out of the top 10 since the start. Unsurprisingly, his feet were in a bad way, slowing his progress.
