An earlier-than-usual start was expected to result in a smaller field for the second fixture of the Borders Road-Running League at Deeside but in fact the reverse occurred, with a record field of almost 500 .

The 4.3-mile course started and finished on the track and included a severe hill after about a mile.

Even though some regulars were missing Prestatyn Running Club had a great turnout of 24 men and 12 women Frances Garnett, Jane Hughes and young Harry Driscoll all making their League debuts.

Steve Forsyth led to the squad home in 11th place overall, with Amie Bagnall, who missed the first race in Caernarfon, the club’s first lady.

The weather was much more favourable on Sunday than the previous day when three members ran in the tough Betws Trail 10k at Betws-y-Coed. Problems with their chips meant that their times were not all recorded, but the finishing order of the members was Des Davies 54.10 (3rd M60),, Martin Gill (approx 40th in 57.30) and Helen Alefounder (92nd in 66.09)

Four members made the journey to Crosby on a miserable Saturday morning for the local Parkrun, the course for which went past the Anthony Gormley figures on the beach. They were again supporting the “Feel, Find, Mind” campaign for breast cancer.

Results: 11 Steve Weedman 22.49 (1st M50), 80 Julia Evans 29.15 (3rd L50), 104 D ebbie Weedman 31.14, 119 Emma Birchall 32.48.

The nurses may have called off their strike last week but physiotherapist Hannah Garnett went ahead chalked up a couple of “strikes” of her own at the club’s annual bowling night at the Ffrith Complex.

She won the ladies’ prize, with the overall winner being Matty Smith. The booby prize went to James Rogers.

Over 40 members took part in the popular event which was once organised by Duncan Longley.
