There was a a record field of over 470 for the second fixture of the Borders Road-Running League in Birkenhead Park on Sunday, and a very encouraging turnout of 23 members of Prestatyn Running Club among them.
Tony Wood had an outstanding run, finishing very strongly and Rachel Shipley produced another superb performance to lead the ladies’ team home.
With four men in the first 100 finishers, including League debutant Jamie Betts, it was a very heartening all-round display. The men finished third in Division 2 and the women fourth, and they hold those same positions on aggregate after two races.

Joint captains Sophie Johnson and Mandy Cartwright took on two very different off-road challenges within 48 hours.
On Thursday evening they and four other members travelled to Llandegla Forest for the first of this winter’s Dash in the Dark series. The four-miler includes tough climbs, some technical descents and plenty of mud and water.
Results: 39 Ben Thomas 35.48, 46 Simon Bonfield 36.52, 68 Sophie Johnson 40.47, 75 Mandy Cartwright 44.15, 64 Nem James 47.27, 85 Nicki Triggs 47.36.
On Sunday the mud was replaced by sand as Sophie and Mandy ran in the scenic Anglesey Trail 10k in Newborough Forest, with much of it along the beach.
Sophie clocked 62.46 and Mandy , who was hampered by an ankle injury, 66.07.
Tom Carter, who like clubmates Gordon Jones and Gareth Hughes, is in the Welsh squad for next Saturday’s British and Irish Masters’ cross-country international in Glasgow, had a confidence-boosting win in the Nova Parkrun, setting a new pb of 17.16.
